Regenerative Tourism Award 2024
Anima Hotels: tourism as a regenerative force for the environment and society
"Rather than just preserving, we seek to revitalize and enrich, leaving a constructive and lasting footprint that elevates the destination and the people who inhabit it."
- Andrea Figueras, representative of Anima Hotels
Since its inception, Anima Hotels has worked tirelessly to redefine tourism through an approach that aims to be a positive force for the environment and society. This approach has earned them the award in the Regenerative Tourism category at the Traveling for Happiness 2024 awards. Their commitment to the regeneration of natural and social spaces includes concrete actions, such as the elimination of plastics, the reduction of carbon emissions and the promotion of sustainable practices in all their hotels.
One of the most prominent initiatives of its +Anima project is the work to eliminate single-use plastic. To date, the company's Hotel Sant Cugat has managed to replace all plastics in its rooms, and two other hotels in the group are expected to complete the transition this year. In addition, they have collected 3,000 kg of plastics from the Mediterranean Sea, contributing to the cleanup of marine ecosystems. This action is part of its positive tourism approach, in which the impact of tourism becomes a regenerative force.
In its commitment to the circular economy, Anima Hotels has implemented the reuse of resources in all its properties. In addition, they are working together with Pack2Earth to replace fossil-based plastics with biodegradable and compostable materials at room temperature. This project aims to set a new standard in the hotel industry, demonstrating that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Waste management and carbon footprint
Another pillar of Anima Hotels ' sustainable strategy is its commitment to responsible waste management. Each hotel has a separation, weighing and recycling system that ensures the correct disposal of waste and fosters a culture of environmental responsibility among employees and guests. In addition, since 2018 they have implemented procedures to measure their carbon footprint, achieving up to a 60% reduction through the use of 100% renewable energy provided by Galp EnergĂa. This commitment allows them to align with the Sustainable Development Goals and move towards carbon neutrality in their operations.
For Anima Hotels, sustainability is a philosophy that permeates the entire organization. The company has designed a regular sustainability training plan that includes technical and motivational training to raise awareness and motivate its staff. These trainings, complemented by an internal communication newsletter , help ensure that each employee is aligned with the group's environmental and social objectives.
"We have also started a collaboration on a community composting project, aimed at local farmers, and we are already implementing water resilience plans to be more efficient in water management, installing a rainwater tank in one of our hotels to collect rainwater," says Anima Hotels representative Andrea Figueras.
Anima Hotels is committed to a long-term vision for sustainable development. The company has an annually revised sustainability plan that establishes clear global and local objectives aligned with the mission of promoting regenerative tourism. Each project has an allocated budget line, thus ensuring the necessary resources to advance the implementation of new practices.
One of the most ambitious objectives for 2025 is the integration of a Sustainability Management System. Sustainability Management System that will centralize and optimize the management of its environmental initiatives. In addition, they are working on their first ESG(environmental, social and governance) report, which will be published in the first quarter of 2025. This document will reflect progress on their sustainability objectives and provide a transparency tool to evaluate Anima Hotels' positive impact on communities and the environment.

Towards a positive and necessary tourism
Anima Hotels ' proposal goes beyond minimizing the impact of tourism: it seeks to transform tourism into a force for good, into a practice that brings real value to society and the natural environment. "Our rooms are completely free of single-use plastics, or that guarantees that no plastic waste generated in our spaces can end up in our beloved Mediterranean Sea," says Figueras.
Anima Hotels continues to blaze a new trail in the hotel industry, demonstrating that tourism can be a tool for regeneration and benefit for all involved. Its model of positive tourism represents an innovative and hopeful proposal for the sector, in which tourism must respect, improve and revitalize the places and communities where it is developed.
