Decarbonization 2025 Award

SATRE Group: when efficiency transforms historic luxury

The SATRE Group has been awarded the Decarbonization Prize at the Traveling for Happiness 2025 awards for the energy renovation project carried out at the Hotel Relais & Châteaux Orfila, a protected historic building located in the center of Madrid. This intervention exemplifies how emissions reduction and energy efficiency can be effectively integrated into established urban environments, aligning with the objectives of combating climate change and transitioning to a low-carbon tourism model.

The project stands out for its comprehensive approach, combining technical innovation, respect for heritage, and advanced energy management, positioning the hotel as a benchmark for decarbonization within the high-end hotel sector.

Deep energy renovation and zero emissions

The Relais & Châteaux Orfila Hotel has undergone extensive energy renovation work, reducing its non-renewable primary energy consumption by 46.43% and improving its energy certification from D to B in energy consumption and A in CO₂ emissions, according to the final Energy Efficiency Certificate officially registered.

The actions carried out include improving the thermal envelope by replacing exterior carpentry on a protected façade, maintaining heritage requirements, as well as the comprehensive renovation of thermal installations, replacing the use of fossil fuels with high-efficiency aerothermal systems, which has reduced direct carbon dioxide emissions to zero. The project has also incorporated sustainable management of construction waste, in accordance with current regulations, ensuring its correct recovery.

This intervention, developed as a pilot project by the Hotel Technology Institute (ITH) and supported by Next Generation EU funds, demonstrates that it is possible to improve energy performance, reduce the carbon footprint, and increase thermal and acoustic comfort for guests without compromising the historical value of the building.

A replicable model aligned with long-term sustainability

Beyond the immediate impact, the Hotel Orfila project is part of a long-term decarbonization strategy promoted by Grupo SATRE. Its objectives include continuous monitoring of energy performance through smart platforms, training staff in operational sustainability, incorporating circularity criteria into purchasing and suppliers, and replicating the model in other group assets.

Thanks to its demonstrative and replicable nature, this renovation has established itself as a national benchmark in hotel decarbonization, actively contributing to the sustainable transformation of the tourism sector and reinforcing the group's commitment to responsible economic development in line with current climate challenges.
